  Internet -- Hybrid media environment

Internet, a global computer networks, provides a communication forum in which an estimated 58 million adults using it in the U.S. and Canada. People use Internet for information dissemination and communication in individual, group, and mass contexts. The media types used in Internet are diversified, for example, paper-like texts, graphics, and television-like visuals, sounds as well as animations. The appearance of this communication tool dims the traditional boundaries between different media tapes. At the same time, it gives us an opportunity to refine the positive strategies of designing other tapes of media and use them in Internet production. On the other hand, Internet has its own characters different from other media. For instance, Hypertext and Hypermedia allow users to navigate through the program and support connectivity within and across networked computer systems. Using Internet also can reach and get information from traditional media tapes. Such as, 123 US newspapers and 1,300 magazine services have distinct web sites, and TV stations and film industry also use web site as assisted instrument. Now, we can use online newspapers, library, radio station, and video programs on the web. In the near future, online TV station will appear?!

   Multimedia production

Multimedia technology combines various kinds of media to display information. It integrates text, graphic, sound, video and animation and creates a new communication environment. Along with the improvement of  hardware and software of computer technology, multimedia resources become more plentiful than ever before. It is one of the important issues that how to apply each media method to design and present multimedia program appropriately and fit the principles of human cognitive process. We should understand that multimedia applications are not according to the amount of media the designer use, but the correct ways are used.

  Notes in designing multimedia program

Text and graphic: Apparently, text can not be used alone in a multimedia application, and it should leave enough space to other media, because image and moving graphic are more intuitive to display what the thing is. Text can provide direction or explanation of relevant contents. Font types and point sizes need suitable for the style and space of what is presented. Hypertext used in web-based design will be very helpful for building a bridge to other contents. Graphic is a better way to describe a real situation. It  gives the audience clear image about a existent matter and illustrates directly. Before using each graphic, we should consider its content, pattern, and performance from not only the view point of practicality, but also aesthetics. Therefore, editing an image is a very important part of using them. Popular software of editing graphic is Adobe Photoshop. 2D, 3D and animation graphics are more powerful and noticeable. If used in a proper way, the program will look like more active and modernistic.

Audio and Video: Using audio and video to display messages is the most suitable way for cognitive habits. But good quality audio and video need high technical supports and more expensive. Digital A/V techniques assisted by computer technology have developed very fast. In the process of producing and applying these techniques, we should understand their standards, resolution, formats, and master the editing methods.

  Interactivities in instructional design

Learning process is a series of brain activities: Stimulus--Response--Reinforcement is the three steps of learning. When the learner accepts a stimulus (e.g. new knowledge), s/he will has relevant response to the stimulus. At this time, instructor or the instructive media production should gives feedback or evaluation to the learner's response and help the learner recognize her/his behavior true or false, or decide further behavior. On the other hand, learning is an active cognitive process, and learner will choose the contents according to his/her need and interest. This requires that the instructive production can provide functions that lead user to take part in the program and become a part of its final creation. According to the characteristics of learning, multimedia instructional program should provide more interactivities with the users. This includes:

Composite structure: Combining linear and nonlinear structure and providing branchings so that user can navigate through the application.

Tailored feedback: Giving appropriate feedback to different answers and help user recognize how to get the right answer.

Interesting contents: Arranging interesting and challenging contents will keep user's attention on the program.

Evaluating achievement: After user finishing the program, comparing individual's achievement to others and encourage the user improving his/her study.
